Empire Health Foundation is proud to partner with Premera Blue Cross on this four-year Fund, which is intended to support the advancement of quality healthcare in under-resourced communities by making grants to hospitals, outpatient clinics, and other healthcare providers in rural areas of Washington State.

New childhood obesity data shows progress, room for improvement in Spokane and nationwide
October 14, 2019
Amid national attention on childhood obesity rates, newly released data for Washington show that 7,100 youth ages 10-17 are obese. That puts the state’s rate for this age group at 11%, ranking Washington as the sixth lowest in the U.S.

Shifting a menu toward scratch-made

Spokane Public Schools in Spokane, Wash., received a grant to help begin its scratch-made menu. Three and half years ago, Empire Health Foundation, a regional charitable foundation, awarded the district $1 million to fund its efforts, which included training for all nutrition staff and implementation of a menu that included scratch-made options.
